From Software recently announced that Elden Ring has sold over 30 million copies worldwide since its release in 2022. This achievement places it among the best-selling games of all time, alongside classics like Borderlands 2, Call of Duty: Black Ops, and Diablo 3.
The game first launched on February 25, 2022, and later received a major DLC expansion, Shadow of the Erdtree, on June 21. Since its debut, 30 million players on both PC and consoles have ventured into The Lands Between. This feat becomes even more impressive considering the game’s reputation for being notoriously challenging—players embraced the difficulty and dove in regardless!
Beyond its commercial success, Elden Ring garnered critical acclaim as well. Both the original game and its DLC received rave reviews. The shift from the Dark Souls series to an open-world format resonated well with both fans and critics. Despite maintaining the trademark difficulty of Dark Souls, the game saw some nerfs and balance tweaks over time to slightly ease the challenge.
What From Software will do with this incredible achievement is anyone’s guess, but it’s clear the company understands the game’s beloved status. With Elden Ring Nightreign, a spin-off co-operative game, on the horizon, they seem poised to build on the original’s world and assets with a fresh twist. It wouldn’t be surprising if they continue to thrive in this genre.
